The term ‘alt coin’ is short for alternative coin, and can be used to refer to any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.

When Satoshi Nakamoto invented Bitcoin, an entirely new type of peer-to-peer digital money called crypto currency was created. At that time Bitcoin was the only currency of this kind in existence.

Over time, however, other developers began to come up with new ideas for different things that could be done with this new technology, and started new blockchains to explore and implement their ideas. These new blockchains came to be known as ‘alt coins’ or ‘altcoins’ because they provided alternatives to the Bitcoin blockchain and coin.

Many altcoins can be found listed with their own page in our glossary section – please take a look to learn more!
